Jared and Jordan

Farm culture is a big part of life for many families in Oregon Cave, West Virginia. In the Masters Family, this is especially true, where two brothers and a father have worked together to maintain a cattle farm. Jared, 23 and his brother Jordan, 20, have both grown up in Oregon Cave and continue to live there. Jared works on the farm with Jordan, but is also studying to become a chef, and Jordan studies at New River Community and Technical College with the emphasis in Biology. They both know the work that is needed to sustain a cattle farm while their father works in a separate business. Though juggling school and farming hasn’t been easy, it has brought the two together in a special way. “Saying we’re best workmates and friends is an understatement”, says Jared.

Denny Powell

A love for NASCAR’s #3 Dale Earnhardt has fueled Denny Powell’s passion for car mechanics. A Native to Oregon Cave, W.Va., Powell has lived on the same block his entire life. A disabled retiree, he runs a thrift store next to his home, and still dabbles in mechanics, helping out neighbors with their auto repairs. Originally the thrift store was a grocery store that opened in the 1940’s when it was run by his grandparents. A self-described “common man,” he lives alone now and helps those whom he can with odds and ends in the community.
