Freedom of Music

Guitarist Doug Scott sums up the feeling that playing traditional bluegrass music with close friends brings him after a day of work. “Music sets you free, there aren’t any problems in your world when your making music.”
A mechanic by day and bluegrass musician by night, Scott has been playing bluegrass since he was 8-years-old and knows hundreds of songs by memory. He plays every Tuesday night with his band at his grandmother’s house, where small groups of fiddlers, pickers and strummers join him to entertain others and relax among friends.
After the last notes have been played, Doug returns to his home in Hillsboro, W.Va. where he lives without electricity, running water or a telephone. He hasn’t had electricity for five years and says that he doesn’t mind it.
