The Warrior, The Sheriff, and The Bearpaw
According to the Census, the Native American population in Pocahontas County makes up 0.07% of the demographic. Most of them are descendants of 83-year-old Joe ‘Bearpaw’ Jonese, a WWII veteran who was born on a reservation in Wyoming. His son David, is the Sheriff of the county.
Joe’s grandson, Lakota, is a senior at the high school where he serves as the Fighting Warrior mascot at several sporting events dressed in leather and a head dress that his grandfather made for him while working as the school janitor.
A stark contrast to the pillar of health he once was, Joe recently finished chemotherapy treatments for bladder cancer and now spends most of his days in a chair or bed. Meanwhile, Lakota is finding his place among his peers and will soon leave for college where he plans to join the ROTC Marines. Together the three generations have adjusted to the Appalachian community while still commanding pride and respect for their heritage.
